Pining for Summer

January 27, 2014

Late January, 2014 - It's been colder than I can ever remember lately, and that makes me pine for summer. Who am I kidding--I pine for summer all the time. I am looking forward to camp again for this year. We are going to do 11 weeks this year--more than we've ever done. Another change of note is that the shuttle is going to leave camp at 4:00 rather than 5:00. But the biggest change is that we're doing a weeklong overnight camp at Camp Albemarle from August 4-8. We have been talking about it for years, but last year, the talk reached a fever pitch, and we are going to give it a go. We'll be limited to 48 campers, and we are taking only those who have been with us for at least two weeks in previous weeks or summers. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy trails!

The 14th Year at Camp is the 100th at Blue Ridge Pool

February 24, 2013

February, 2013 - This summer marks a momentous occasion at Field Camp. Several years ago, we moved our camp to the Blue Ridge Pool on Owensville Road where, in 1909, R. Warner Wood started a boys' boarding camp that lasted for 10 years. In 1913, he built the Blue Ridge Pool, a 100-yards long stream-fed swimming pool. Its waters, which stay under 80 degrees, have been keeping five or six generations of Charlottesville folks cool. It was perhaps never more appreciated than last summer which, if you don't remember, was the hottest summer on record in Charlottesville. July was four degrees hotter, on average, than the previous July. Field Camp is excited about being there this summer on the 100th anniversary of the coolest pool in town--Blue Ridge Pool.

Our 13th Season

March 3, 2012

We are looking forward to a great season at camp this summer. It will be Field Camp's 13th season, and our first at our new home at Blue Ridge Swim Club and Field Camp. We have built some new facilities in the offseason, including a beautiful timber frame pavilion. We will still spend most of the overnights at Camp Albemarle, but we will do three at Blue Ridge Swim Club, trying to break it in as our new long-term site. We look forward making it feel like home this summer.

Field Camp @ Field School

May 15, 2011

Field Camp has been regularly featured in the real news this spring as we have purchased Blue Ridge Swim Club as the future site for camp. We will not be moving there until the summer of 2012, however, as bureaucratic delays in the building process have made it impossible to make the site ready for the coming summer. Instead, we will use Field School at 1408 Crozet Avenue as our home base this summer, a move we were anticipating making for this summer before we learned about the BRSC opportunity. Field School, where we have played many a capture-the-flag the past few summers, has a nice field behind the building that's surrounded by shade trees, woods, and a garden. We will hold camp in the back field on Mondays and Wednesdays, with afternoon trips on those days up to Mint Springs to swim. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we will do our usual hikes. We will do overnights on Thursday nights at Camp Albemarle on 6 of the 9 weeks, leaving from Field School Thursday morning and returning Friday afternoon. Those who have been around for a while will remember that we had this same pattern during our first five years of camp at which time Tandem School and Free Union Country School served as our base camps. It will be another fun and adventurous summer with all the familiar faces, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Field Camp is Moving

April 13, 2011

For the Summer of 2011, Field Camp will be moving to its new and permanent home at 1275 Owensville Road, also the site of Blue Ridge Swim Club. The members of the club sold the property to us recently, and we are excited about the prospect of running the camp on the 14-acre property during the summer. We will still run the same shuttle from ALC Copies with the same departure and arrival times each week. We are planning to continue to use Camp Albemarle this summer for all but three of our overnights (only those on the weeks of June 13, June 20, and July 18th will be held in Ivy). Thanks to everyone who supported this purchase. We look forward to seeing you out in Ivy this summer.

Happy Birthday to Us

November 11, 2010

Just checking in during the offseason on Field Camp's eleventh birthday. We are already making plans for next year, which will bring some interesting changes to our summer routine. The website will be undergoing some changes, and I promise more fun and adventure will be in store for us. I can't wait to see all of you again in the summer. -Todd

Field Camp Films

July 15, 2010

July, 2010 - We're having another excellent (if absurdly hot) summer on the Moormans. IT's been the same as it ever was, with a couple of new additions this summer, including weekly movies and archery with Jay. Here are this year's films so far... Refrigerator Time Machine, King Crabcakes Takes Over, and SOC Catastrophe.
